First you give him your name. You tell him that your name Martha and he smiles smiling friendly, curves and tells you what he thinks you look like a Marcy may. So in your name — Marcy may.
First you give him your name. And then you give it a rest.
"Martha Marcy may Marlene" is brilliant, quietly unnerving movie about smart young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) which falls entirely under the influence of a charismatic cult leader (John Hawkes). While the film begins with the March who fled the cult complex, she believes that her mind is not nearly as easy to recover.
In his first film writer director Sean Durkin effectively builds suspense seemingly empty space, the use of silence and frames-Centre for slowly building tension. And it's breakout performance for Olsen (the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley) to Jennifer Lawrence in winter bones. "Olsen makes Martha sympathetic and believable, even when it descends into a situation that most cannot imagine.
The film begins with the March to go through the forest, her fellow pupils, carries out its. They let her go, but I am sure she will come back to possible to its own. Instead, Martha can cause her estranged sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and find refuge with her and her husband yuppie (Hugh Dancy) at their summer home.
March not to tell her sister, where she lives in the past two years, but it still has the test. As she stares into space, Durkin weaves in memory of Martha in the cult so easily, they do not feel as memories; part of it still seems to be there.
These memoirs of Martha in the gradual assimilation of the chart in the cult as a cult leader Patrick (Hawkes) played on her family and the need for security. Patrick manages it with flattery and compassion make eye contact and say things like, "I worry for you" and "Please do not be selfish.
This is yet another brilliant performance, Hawkes; While Patrick displays one or two times as outbreaks of anger, he is much worse when he speaks quietly and earnestly Martha, skinny arm around her shoulder. He should not tell Martha that do; It makes her want to prove himself by doing this. By the time Martha understands how depraved cult, it's too late, and she soon helps "Guide" recruits too.
This is an insidious progression, even more because the rural cult compound seems so bucolic and peaceful, and the other members of the cult, seems so friendly. Contrast, IKEA-catalogue of perfection and fragile atmosphere of Lucy's life, and you can see the appeal of lost soul as Martha.
In fact, if there is outside of the notes in the "Martha" is that Lucy and her husband are so shrill and unlikable, parts guarantee so that they seem to serve only as a representation of the shallow, materialistic life rejected Martha.
But this is a minor quibble, since Olsen took our attention at every moment as a woman with a damaged psyche, pereučivaemsâ, what does it mean to be normal again. It wounded, frightened, angry sometimes and feel alienated from the world.
Olsen shows us conflicting emotions churning in Martha, inviting each emotion finely with a flick of the eye or twist her mouth. Its deeply felt, a haunting performance and film, are very difficult to get rid of.
