Darkness descended in Calcutta music and culture of the world as news of the death of Bhupen Hazarika balladeer master spread Saturday evening.
Hazarika had a long association with Calcutta and resulted in a rich oeuvre of Bengali songs, which have retained their popularity for decades.

Multi-faceted genius Hazarika, produced and directed a half-hour documentary for Kolkata Doordarshan Kendra in 1977, folk songs and dances of the North-East India, entitled through Melody and rhythm.
He also received several awards in West Bengal for music film and for his contribution to art and culture.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her predecessor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee paid glowing tributes Hazarika with sympathy to his death.
