Penn State football coach Joe Paterno issued the following statement Wednesday:
"I am disappointed with the decision of the Board of Trustees, but I should take it.
The tragedy occurred, and we should all have the patience to allow the trial to continue. I appreciate the outpouring of support, but I want to emphasize that everyone should remain calm and respect the University, its properties and all that we cherish.
I have been incredibly blessed to spend my entire career working with people I love. I am grateful for the words of all coaches, players and staff that were part of the programme. And to all our fans and supporters, my family and I will be forever in your debt.
Earlier Wednesday, Paterno issued a statement that he planned to retire at the end of the season:
"I am absolutely devastated by events in this case. I mourn for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.
I came to work every day in recent years, 61 with one clear objectives in mind: to serve the interests of the University and the young people who have been transferred to my assistance. Today I have the same goal.
That is why I have decided to announce my retirement, effective at the end of the season. At this point, the Board of Trustees should not spend a moment discussing my status. They are much more important issues to address. I want to make it easy for them as I possibly can.
It is a tragedy. This is one of the great sadness of my life. The advantage of hindsight I wish I could have done more.
My goal now must keep my commitment to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life, doing everything I can to help the University.
