Rajiv Killer Mother Pleads For Life Son


COIMBATORE: Arputhammal, 65-year-old mother Perarivalan, who faces the death penalty in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Monday, made a fervent appeal to the political leadership of the country to abolish the death penalty to avoid innocent people hanged on trumped-up charges.

Talking to the media a day after mega Convention against the death penalty and the continuing genocide in Sri Lanka, Arputhammal confirmed that her son is not a crime and expressed the hope that he will be freed from the gallows one day as she has faith in the democratic system.

"The death penalty is a barbaric and never succeeded in reducing crime. The term death penalty should be removed even from the law books, '' she said. Referring to the impressive public response was her case in cities like New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram, Arputhammal said that those who have faith in justice must come forward to defend three persons sentenced to death in the case of the murder of Rajiv Gandhi.
