Every day, New York tabloids vie to sell readers in newsstands at outrageous headlines, dramatic photographs and sometimes excellent reporting. Who is the winner today?
New York Post: Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted yesterday of manslaughter for the death of Michael Jackson, to administer dangerous doses of sleep using Propofol. The verdict was not too big a surprise and, under the new sentencing guidelines, Murray, longtime doctor Jackson (and, according to the post, his "doctor Feelgood"), probably only actually spend a few months behind bars. But it is very large: it can be argued that the large star 20-th century found killed by your doctor. If you have not been convicted Murray, you can expect decades television deals with "question" whether Murray managed dose Fatal Jackson, much as appear in some mystery death of Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe.
Not surprisingly, the story makes the front page, and on any other day, he is likely to receive it all. And with this header, it would have worked: "QUACKO!" reads the giant, heavy black type at the bottom of the page. "Jacko doc killer guilt." (Of course that the dek is a little question begging: he only became Jackson's doc "killer" for the post, when he was found guilty. "But it's a pun).
The other day it would be all the cover, but yesterday, the Club of monks, the fourth woman, first attach its name on its statement accused Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain sexual harassment. Sharon actually describes probably qualifies as Bialek sexual abuse.
Of course Andrea Peyser was there and her column today is difficult. However, this document does not take her back. (The Prosecutor is "Gold Digger" and "smooth operator living way above its means.")
This will certainly move documents if you post a bet on its front page on a troglodytic rant, if many readers just plunking down their 50 cents on the joy of anger. But they play straight — very straight. Uncharacteristically straight. "Gall tells: my Cain grope." Ok this is slightly tabloidy. But it is very "you decide", isn't it?
Daily News: at 50, Bialek is an attractive woman. Nice blonde hair, makeup, conservative regime. Glasses, perhaps slightly grandmotherly, but overall it gracefully aged woman. Her eyes are bright and clear, I think blue or Hazel. It is a good face on the cover: an enviable her appearance and even relatable. So the news gives her basically the entire page. Along with her big person hed in the playoffs, white text, reads as follows: ' Come clean CAIN. Mr. ' Dek:-"4-th bratij said candidate groped her.
Well actually there's a lot more. Two skyboxes: "Jacko DOC guilty" and "Boxing great Joe Frazier dies". There is a Snipe (the band cut the angle of the picture or flag), which reads "inside: special tribute to our VETS." there is also a proposal to win a trip to Antigua, where it is warm. "Box, blue with white text, red text with yellow and baby blue with white text. This is an awful lot to look at. But what may look Soupy casserole page you've saved more than one fact that Bialek, through so great, it functions as a centre of gravity for the page. If the page how to do this, you can get away with smaller boxes & headers.
Comments: I know the story of Cain is great, but somehow I don't think any document gets what he needs from him. News we hoped to play right at the very least. The post seems to be so careful, isn't it?
On the other hand, there are photos: News remains the page, using something big. But it looks like it was a talk show, not accusing the candidate attempts to attack her in the car. Post a picture, though less watch, has her anger. Her eyes, strongly indicated to the left; A scold.
And "QUACKO" puts them at the finish line.
