John Lackey Tommy John Surgery: Tough Start For New GM Boston

Ben Cherington simply was introduced as General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, when he should have done his first tough job in his new role--to inform fans John Lackey need Tommy John operation.

It is expected that the former Angels pitcher to miss all the 2012 season after reconstructive surgery on his throwing elbow.

"It was like most of you know, somewhat jerky elbow soreness throughout the season," said Cherington, Lackey, who went 12-12 with a 6.41 era in 28 starts this season. "We decided--he decided--would be a good idea after this season, to get that checked again. ... After several consultations [doctors] John decided to go ahead with Tommy John surgery. "

But, he added, "Cherington really excited about the future, clearly cares about the surgery, getting done and rehabbing. But he knows that he's a much better pitcher than what he showed in 2011, and I think he's going to be a much better pitcher than what he showed in the year 2011.

Lackey had some questions-field, and the worst by far is his wife breast cancer earlier this year. He also was one of three Red Sox pitchers, accused in the Boston Globe drinking beer, eating fried chicken and playing video games in the club during the game, in which they are not pitching. All three pitchers refused to report.

John Lackey pitched through the circumstances of this year, I don't think any of us in this room you can fully understand, and he got beat for it a little in the way, "says Cherington. "This guy is dealing with some of the things both on the field and off the field, which was very hard and I thought he showed great strength pitching through it."
